January 16th 2024 / by Suzanne Ingleton / Menopause /Working / Weight Loss
I’ve been working with women for over 16 years, helping them to lose weight, get fit and be the very best versions of themselves, and not once did I consider the impacts of Menopause with regard to the how and why they either could or could not achieve the results they were looking for.
On reflection, I've been working with people based on my own experiences, based on my life, my age, my health and my problems...
This is because I was talking about my own experiences, which meant I was attracting women who were having similar experiences.....and it certainly wasn’t around menopause.
Isn’t that interesting?
Now, over the last 12 months or so, I’ve become more and more aware that my body has been going on its own Menopausal journey and all the unexplained symptoms like low energy, foggy brain, & achy joints are now making sense.
I've also noticed that more and more women who are in their 40’s & beyond, who have challenging roles at work or run their own business are coming to me for help. They’re juggling home, life and relationships and their weight seems to be on a continual incline, despite trying absolutely everything under the sun to lose it!
So I've decided to take a new approach to how I coach and teach, and bring in the science, tools & support for women going through all stages of Menopause, experiencing weight gain, and how it affects them in the workplace.
Getting back to Basics
There are three distinct stages in the transition between our reproductive years and our non-reproductive years.
Peri – Menopause
This is when our estrogen production begins to decline, which mostly begins from the age of 45yrs. Women will still have a period. However, they will either be light or heavy, disappear or re-appear depending on a number of factors, which include stress, over exercising and weight gain.
Menopause:
This is when periods cease, which, on average around the world, is 51 – 52 years.
Post- Menopause:
When periods have stopped for a year. Some women will still have severe symptoms right from Peri Menopause, through to Menopause, and into Post Menopause – sometimes lasting up to 10 years or more.
Women's life expectancy has also increased dramatically over the last 100 years, from around 65yrs to 80 years globally, and in our modern day fast-paced lifestyle, many women are also choosing to work well into their 60’s & beyond. In 2020, data taken by The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that approx. 40% of women are now working well into their mid 60’s.
The Impact of Menopause in the Workplace:
The impacts of menopause in the workplace are unique and affect women’s productivity, confidence, energy, and ability to balance a busy career with home life. Fluctuating hormones during menopause can result in fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings, which may impact productivity and efficiency. In addition, the physical changes and weight gain associated with menopause can sometimes negatively impact a woman's self-confidence, leading to a decline in overall workplace satisfaction. Balancing work responsibilities with personal commitments may become more challenging.
As an Eating Psychology Coach, I also help to shed light on the connection between menopausal weight gain, emotional, binge and overeating, which are all common by-products of menopause and workplace challenges.
Why do we gain weight during Menopause?
In part, it's due to hormonal changes, particularly a decline in estrogen and progesterone, which can disrupt the body's natural balance and lead to weight gain. Most women notice this when their midsection starts expanding, and they can see more belly and back fat. Other symptoms like bloating & gut issues, hot flushes & night sweats, poor sleep, moodiness & lethargy, mysterious aches & pains in knees & other joints along with shrinking muscles.
Understanding and Overcoming Emotional and Binge Eating:
The significance of addressing emotional eating and binge-eating in the context of menopausal weight gain is not just about eating less and moving more. Menopause can come with elevated emotional and psychological changes, which may lead to unhealthy eating behaviors as a coping mechanism. By getting to the root cause of emotional triggers, finding alternative stress-relief methods, and bringing in healthy lifestyle habits, can all help to break the cycle of emotional eating and promote a healthier relationship with food, body and life during menopause.
