Well, it’s another year over, and 2024 has begun!
I don’t know about you, but I've been doing a lot of reflecting over the last few days of 2023, and I feel like I've come away with a whole new perspective and inspiration to make a slight but significant change in the work that I've been doing with women around weight and its loss.
So what’s changed? My body has changed....my mental capacity has changed....my outlook on life has changed.....my hormones have changed....my gut health has changed....my energy levels have changed......
And I’ve been soooo busy over the year that has just gone, that I failed to really notice WHY these things had changed.
To be honest, I can’t tell you the exact moment when I decided that I needed to go down the path of learning more about menopause....its been gradual... and a thought led to some research and listening more to my body, what others were saying, and relating all of this to my own symptoms and finally deciding that this is the thing that I want to dive deeper into to support myself and my community in 2024.
Now, as part of my learning, I’m going to be sharing my knowledge with you.....because this IS the best way to learn anything new!
Let's dive in on the weighty issue of menopause!
So why is menopause a big deal? It's actually not just about night sweats & hot flushes during the day.....its part of being a woman, and it’s a journey into a new stage of life. Understanding and supporting this time in life will help you to transition easier, without trying to fight it.
For the first time in history, women can now expect to live well into their 60s and beyond, and will spend about 1/3rd of their life in the post-menopause stage, and living on average, an extra seven years more than men.
So wouldn’t we as women want to age in a way that is not fraught with uncomfortable symptoms? Totally!! And WHY is this middle-aged stage of life challenging for so many?
This is what I've learned....
Have you ever heard of "inflammaging"? It's like a low-grade inflammation in your body that can start during menopause. Imagine it’s as if your body is giving you a heads-up, "Hey, changes are happening!"
Inflammaging is a term created to describe chronic low grade inflammation that is age-related. It's linked to things like forgetfulness, joint aches & obesity, and it often starts in our late 40s and early 50s during menopause!
These are some of the things that I'm experiencing in post-menopause. At any stage of menopause, your body starts to change, and you may experience extra weight around the belly area, more stress, lack of sleep, foggy mind, and, of course, those “nondescript” hormonal changes that cause havoc in your body and mind.
Menopause brings its own set of challenges, from low energy and mood swings to dealing with thyroid and gut issues, and the good news is we can turn these symptoms around.
So how does this connect with the work that I do in Eating Psychology & Weight Loss?
Menopause isn't just a phase; it's a gateway to aging. As we age, our bodies change, and so do our relationships with food and body. Stress, lack of sleep, and those hormonal shifts can mess not only with our heads, but our eating habits. As an Eating Psychology Coach, I want you to know and understand more about these connections and make friends with your body, instead of heading into battle with it.
Aging Healthfully is not a destination, it’s a journey of discovery.
Whether we want it to happen or not, menopause is part of life, and signals the end of our reproductive years, just as puberty signals the start.
A hundred years ago, when life expectancy was shorter, it might not have been a big deal, but now, with women living longer, it's time to pay attention. We're entering a phase where managing our health matters more than ever.
So, what can you do?
Take a deep breath. You're not alone, and you've got this! Make friends with your body, understand those changes, and embrace healthy aging. Menopause might mark the end of one chapter, but guess what? There are more amazing chapters waiting for you!
