Did you know that the human gut is home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms? That's more than the number of stars in our Milky Way galaxy!
There is an expansive ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and viruses within our gut known as the gut microbiome. While it may seem a little scary to think there are so many bugs in our gut, don't worry - the majority of these are beneficial and play a crucial role in maintaining our overall health.
Our Gut health serves as the foundation for a well-functioning mind and body and, in an ideal world, our bodies can be incredibly healthy with the ability to self-heal. Unfortunately, our modern environment does not always support our gut health. In this blog, I'm going to delve into the importance of a healthy gut, a bit of history, and the consequences of an unhealthy gut, as well as talk about how clean eating helps to maintain a healthy gut.
We’re going to explore the science behind the microbiome and its impact on our well-being, and how clean eating is incredibly important to build into a healthful lifestyle. And, of course, we’ll talk about the impact that an unhealthy gut has on our weight.
Gut History
Our gut consists of trillions of microbial organisms that form the gut microbiome, which houses our immune system and aids in digestion. Historically, our gut health has suffered due to modern dietary and lifestyle choices. Diets high in added sugars, refined carbohydrates, and oils, along with sedentary lifestyles, poor sleep habits, and high levels of stress have all played a significant part in adversely affecting our gut. Another big reason is the overuse of antibiotics and household chemicals, which have all disrupted the balance of beneficial bacteria in our gut.
Gut Health 101
When our gut health is compromised, our mental and physical well-being can suffer. Digestive issues, mood disorders, hormonal imbalances, weakened immune function, weight gain, skin problems, joint pain, and sleep disturbances are among the many consequences of an unhealthy gut.
When we have a healthy gut, we have a balanced microbiome, can absorb nutrients and breakdown our food that helps to improve our metabolism and maintain a healthy weight, as well as producing all the feel good hormones, which are serotonin and dopamine, along with supporting our immune system.
Microbiome and Mental Health
The gut microbiome is home to a huge array of bacteria, with the gut containing 10 times more bacteria than the rest of our body. Research has shown that the gut microbiome not only influences digestion but also affects our mental and emotional health. The presence of beneficial bacteria in our gut plays a crucial role in producing neurotransmitters (feel good hormones) serotonin and dopamine, which are essential for regulating mood and emotions.
Clean Eating and Gut Health
Clean eating is crucial for good gut health because it provides nourishment and supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A diet rich in fiber helps maintain a healthy gut environment and is essential for proper digestion. It’s really important to aim for at least 25–30 grams of fiber daily, which is about double what the average person typically eats.
Excessive sugar intake can feed harmful bacteria in the gut and is a no-brainer when it comes to weight management. Inflammation from high sugar consumption can lead to various health issues like obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and fatty liver.
Clean Eating is a Lifestyle
Clean eating is not a short-term diet but a sustainable lifestyle that prioritizes whole, minimally processed foods. By focusing on quality food choices and avoiding artificial additives, you’ll support your gut with all the wonderful nutrients to help it thrive. Clean eating is about mindful eating, fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats, which all contribute to a healthy gut.
Achieving and maintaining a healthy gut is integral to our overall health and well-being. By understanding the importance of gut health and what helps and hinders its health, we can live our very best life feeling energized, happy, vital and being able to manage a healthy weight and uphold a healthy mind - which leads to a Thriving life.
Remember, true wellness starts from the inside and by prioritizing our gut health through clean eating, you are making a powerful step forward in achieving your own optimal well-being.
