We’ve all heard the term ‘you are what you eat’, but have you ever really stopped to think about how true that is?
Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and each and every one of those cells needs a constant supply of nutrients so they can do their jobs.
What we put into our mouth affects every one of these cells, and every part of how we are made up emotionally, biologically and physically as humans.
Food affects our mood, our energy levels, the rate that our body heals, how much and what we crave, how we think, how we sleep, our libido, cell generation and our general health.
Picture this…you have just walked into a fruit & veg shop, or you’re at a farmers' market. Notice how vibrant the colours are, all made up of lots of different kinds of vegetables & fruits. You may notice the deep purple of the eggplants contrasted by the bright green of crispy snow peas. You may notice the rich red tomatoes nestled next to the bright yellow cobs of juicy sweetcorn. Can you smell the sweet and zesty oranges in contrast to the sharp tangy smell of the lemons, while your eyes wander over row upon row of punnets of bright red sweet and succulent strawberries…
Is your mouth watering? Are you noticing a fresh energy beginning to tingle within as you begin to anticipate the taste of these fruits and vegetables in your mouth…the taste & aromas beginning to drift through your senses….
This kind of food – fresh, delicious, natural and nourishing food has energy. Fresh produce still holds the energy of life. It feels light and alive, and when we consume this type of food we consume the energy, the freshness, we feel lighter and more vital.
Now….take your mind to the last time you had a takeaway. Something that was highly processed, like a fast food burger or something that has been sitting in a packet – either sweet or savoury – for goodness knows how long…..
Highly processed foods do not contain the energy of life. They have been processed and packaged to make sure they have a long shelf life. Every part of the main component of the food is dead and heavy.
When you eat highly processed dead and heavy food, you feel dense and heavy. The feeling of satiation is very short-lived, so your body asks for more and more of the same kind of dense and heavy food. There is no energy in this kind of food, therefore it does not give us any energy, it just takes it away, making us feel tired and lethargic.
We become more susceptible to illness as our immune system is depleted. Our brains get foggy and a lack of enthusiasm creeps in. We become unhappy with our life – no energy, unhappy with the way we look and feel, leading to low mood and weight gain.
Did you know that 90% of the feel good hormone serotonin is produced in the gut? If we continue to put unhealthy & highly processed foods in our gut, we are going to get less and less of the feel good hormones and messages that keep our minds happy and vital.
You are what you eat….
So next time you go shopping, hang out more in the fresh produce section and less in the isles. Always choose the best quality food that is available to you and nurture and nourish your amazing body. After all, we only get one….
