Just in case you didn’t know, I went on a very long walk last Friday to raise money for Mental Health that was organised by Coastrek Wild Women on Top and it was totally EPIC!!
This was one of the most well organised and inspiring events that I have ever done and I was blown away by the level of support, information and inspiration both before and during the event. We totally had soooo much fun and in between the “how much further”? questions, we laughed and laughed!
The scenery was gorgeous and I had no idea there were so many incredible homes tucked in the clifftops and around the coastline.
Over 1000 women and a sprinkling of men walked the 30km distance and Adelaide raised over $844,000 for Beyond Blue, with the tally nationally hitting just over $7million!
I totally loved seeing everyone excited and geared up, ready for adventure. There was so much camaraderie, good cheer, encouragement and team spirit in the air.
It got me thinking about how amazing it would be to have groups of women in our Weight Loss Community get together in walking groups all over Adelaide to support, inspire and hold each other accountable to improve their health and wellbeing. All with a common goal of setting an individual challenge to get healthier, move more, lose weight and come together once a year as a culmination of hard work & effort, determination & accountability to not only raise funds for charity but to cheer each other on and celebrate the women in our community coming together for a common goal.
Why is walking good for you?
The benefits of walking have been scientifically backed and proven for decades as the go to easiest way to get fitter and maintain a good level of health.
Research shows that spending as little as 10 to 20 minutes walking in nature has significant benefits for people’s mental wellbeing and can reduce stress, anger and anxiety, along with….
• Prevents against depression
• Builds your coping and resilience
• Can help distract from negative thoughts
• Gives you a sense of accomplishment
• Offers opportunities to socialise with others
• Improves memory, focus and thinking skills
• Improves sleep so you feel more energised the next day
Walking helps you to lose weight
Because walking is the easiest thing for us to do, it’s the most accessible, yet many discount it as being effective. In fact, just 1 hour a day can help you to burn fat and lose weight!
The amount of energy used is determined by your current weight and walking speed. However, the more you weigh and the faster you walk, the more energy you will burn.
Here is an example of how many calories/energy you will burn for 1 hour of walking.

Many people tend to lose lean muscle mass when they lose weight, and walking can help you preserve lean muscle mass, which helps to consume energy, so you can maintain your desired weight.
If an hour a day is not doable, you can break it down into 2 or 3 shorter, fast bursts of walking to increase your heart rate and burn higher levels of energy.
So, as you can see, walking is VERY doable and it has a range of wonderful benefits for you AND your family. The ripple effect of a healthier, happier life can't be underestimated and I've seen wonderful changes within families, relationships and at work, just by going for a walk, which created happier and healthier ‘feel goods’
