I’ve heard this many times from women who have struggled their whole lives with weight, women who have been dieting for decades to be that slimmer, lighter & fitter version they have always dreamed about….
To be able to lose the weight they have always wanted, begins to feel like the impossible dream….. always striving, thinking, dieting, exercising…..but never quite getting there….
In the past they may have had some short-lived success…. Losing some weight, sometimes a significant amount of weight, and then it begins to creep back on, and old ways return.
For some women, it becomes comfortable to be uncomfortable…..the familiar becomes more enticing than the fear of the unknown.
When you have lived in a bigger body for your whole life, and then you have to start living differently, thinking differently….many things become challenging & overwhelming.
For some women, they have been ‘invisible’ for the majority of their lives. Their slimmer friends get all the attention socially. Having a bigger body can be a place to ‘hide’ or act as a subconscious barrier or protection from uncomfortable new experiences, like dating or forming new friendships or just being noticed.
Then there is the fear of failure. What will happen if they lose the weight and then begin to put it all back on again? Will they lose their new friends, popularity or new relationships? Will they have to cope with being embarrassed & have feelings of shame because they’ve failed yet again?
Fear is an emotion that can hold us back and keep us stuck in a place where we don’t want to be – because ironically, it seems easier and more comfortable to stay where we are.
Fear is also akin to anxiety, where our mind begins to make things up – it creates a future that is scary and unknown…..so, of course, it's logical to be hesitant to head towards it.
But what if you could let go of that fear? What if you could ask yourself this question “where would I be without that fear?” This is a great diffuser and a way of opening up the possibilities of what life would be like having achieved the goal of being your desired weight, shape and size.
It’s also interesting to know that we are all made up of many parts....some harmonious.....and some that seem to be in conflict....but all have the highest intention of helping and protecting us.....only not all know the best way to achieve this.
By taking a “third party” view, you can “ask” the part that is in conflict – the part that holds the fear….what does it need from you that will allow it to come into alignment with all the other parts of you that want to lose weight?
By asking yourself some direct questions, the generalised fear can often be diffused and you can really look into the reality of what and where your fears lie.
Here are a couple of great questions to ask yourself from Byron Katie, author of “The Work”
Q1. Is it true? - your fear
Q2. Can you absolutely know its true? - go deeper and ask yourself again
Q3. How do you react and what happens when you believe that thought (the fear)?
Q4. Who would you be without the thought? – imagine how your life would be if you didn’t even have the thought.
In order for us to move through fear, we have to face it and feel it and then let it go. More often that not, the fear is old, outdated and unfounded patterns of thoughts, that, when released, open up a whole new way of living and thinking that will allow you to be the person you want to be.
