Let me introduce you to an interesting concept that can bring clarity and deeper understanding to your goals – the power of "What." We often hear about the importance of asking "why" to uncover our motivations and purpose. While "why" can be effective in many cases, there are times when asking "what" can lead to even greater insights and clarity.
When we ask "why," we tap into our pain and desire for change. It helps us understand what we are missing in our lives or what we stand to lose if we don't achieve our goals. But did you know that "why" can also trigger confusion or defensiveness? It can make us justify our actions rather than explore them. Sometimes, it feels like criticism in disguise, making us defensive and shutting down our curiosity.
That's where the power of "what" comes in. Instead of focusing on the reasons behind a goal, asking "what" shifts our attention to the possibilities and experiences that our goals entail. It encourages curiosity and exploration, allowing us to uncover deeper motivations without feeling attacked or judged.
To show you how the power of "what" works, as an example, let's consider some weight-related goals and explore why they are important.
1. Why do I want to change my eating and exercise habits?
2. Why do I want to lose weight?
3. Why do I want my clothes to fit better?
4. Why do I want to feel better in myself?
5. Why is it important to me to live a long and healthy life?
By asking "what" repeatedly, you can dig deeper into your reasons for change. Keep asking "what" until you find your compelling reasons. You could also swap out the weight-related questions to anything else you want to change, such as exercising more, quitting smoking, binge-eating, snacking, etc.
Bringing in the power of "what" into your personal development journey can unlock new insights and possibilities. It allows you to explore your goals from different angles, rather than getting stuck in the problem of what is NOT working for you. When we have a deeper understanding of our motivations, we can open up our thoughts to access the resources that we already have within our minds.
So go ahead, try it out for yourself, and experience the transformative power of "what" to unlock the deeper answers that will drive positive change.
